The Claddagh Ring: Meaning, History and How to Wear It

Few pieces of jewellery carry as much meaning as the Claddagh ring. Recognised across the world as a symbol of Irish identity, this small gold or silver ring has been worn for over 300 years — passed down through generations, exchanged as wedding bands, and gifted as a token of loyalty and love.

What Is a Claddagh Ring?

A Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring featuring three symbols: two hands clasping a heart (friendship), a heart at the centre (love), and a crown above the heart (loyalty). Together they form the motto: With my hands I give you my heart, and I crown it with my loyalty.

The ring is named after the fishing village of Claddagh, just outside Galway City on the west coast of Ireland.

The History of the Claddagh Ring

The ring dates back to the 17th century. Its most celebrated origin story involves Richard Joyce from Claddagh village, who was captured by pirates and sold to a Moorish goldsmith. He learned the craft and, when freed, returned to Ireland carrying a gold ring made for the woman who had waited for him. That ring became the first Claddagh ring.

For generations the ring was passed from mother to eldest daughter. By the 19th century it had spread across Ireland and, with the Irish diaspora, across the world — particularly to the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

How to Wear a Claddagh Ring

  • Right hand, point outward: Single and open to love.
  • Right hand, point inward: In a relationship.
  • Left hand, point outward: Engaged.
  • Left hand, point inward: Married.

Claddagh Ring as a Gift

The Claddagh ring is one of the most meaningful gifts in Irish tradition — given as a friendship ring, engagement ring, wedding band, coming-of-age gift, or Mother's Day present. In the Irish-American community it is among the most popular gifts to mark life milestones.

Gold, Silver and Modern Variations

Traditionally made in yellow gold, today you will find Claddagh rings in sterling silver, 9ct and 18ct gold, white gold, rose gold, and two-tone designs. Many are set with emeralds, diamonds, or birthstones for a personal touch.
